26th Sunday of the Ordinary Time. Reflection by Br. Karlo Cruz
In today’s readings, we are reminded that God’s truth is not always found where we expect it—but it is always in Him alone. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ faithful servant, grows jealous when two men, outside the chosen group, receive the Spirit of God. But Moses gently corrects him, teaching that God’s Spirit works beyond human limits. In the letter of James, we are warned that treating people based on wealth or status leads to sin. True justice, after all, is found only in how we follow the Lord’s will.
God created each of us with distinct gifts and personalities to serve His divine purpose. But sometimes His ways are difficult for us to grasp. Our personal desires and ambitions can cloud our vision, pulling us away from the path of holiness. When we rely on our own plans instead of trusting in God, we risk missing the truth He wants to reveal to us.
In the Gospel, John tries to stop someone who isn’t one of their group from casting out demons in Jesus’ name. But Jesus rebukes him, showing that the power of God’s name and truth can work through anyone, even those outside our circle. This is a call for us to focus on the source of all good—Christ Himself. All truth, goodness, and righteousness flow from Him alone.
The Lord also warns us against anything that can lead us into sin. We need to examine our actions carefully and ask if they truly lead us closer to Christ. If not, we must have the courage to cut off those things—no matter how comfortable or familiar they seem. Our mission is to follow Christ with pure hearts, seeking His truth above all.
